VIVA LAS VEGAS!!! Sing it with me, friends. I just got back from spending five days there visiting family and attending a conference. Vegas is super-fun, but it is definitely a challenge to be “good” while there… in many ways! Here’s a little recap of how my trip went from a fitness perspective, plus a few fun photos (view more on my Instagram).
I PACKED HEALTHY SNACKS. I went with my healthy snacks and Shakeology samples packed, but I knew I’d still be faced with temptations right and left. And yes, I was. Open bars and decadent foods were everywhere. I had Shakeology three out of the five days, and snacked on pistachios in the room. The protein bars were kept in my purse in case I got hungry when I was away from my room. They helped offset the times I ate fatty foods and had more than one cocktail (which was pretty often).
EXERCISE HELPS. I found that late-afternoon workouts helped boost my energy level as well as helped me decompress from busy days filled with networking and meetings. Running on the strip? I don’t think so. It was so crowded, even by 9:00 a.m., that running would be a like a frustrating game of RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT. I would not advise running off the strip either; as you don’t have to venture too far off the beaten path to get into some really sketchy neighborhoods. Luckily, my hotel had a fitness center I was able to use. Most hotels do – but they also require you to bring a photo ID. I was unaware of that. Maybe this trip will save you a trip back to your room!
SIN CITY. For me, the biggest fitness sins of Vegas were all the decadent foods and drinks. Luckily, the $11 beers at the Wynn kept my drinking habit in check – but there were a few nights when I went to parties where drinks were comped. I won’t lie – I drank MORE than my share. You know what made me feel better the next day? Shakeology! While I would never tell you that drinking more than a couple drinks a night is a good thing, I WILL say that Shakeology gives you energy and makes you feel better even when you’re dragging.
WATER IS YOUR FRIEND. The climate in Las Vegas is so dry, that drinking a lot of water is essential. I found this out by realizing my throat was always dry. Keep a water bottle with you at all time, and fill it up before you go out.
Now that my trip is over, I hope it doesn’t take long for me to get back on track. Taking four days off in one week, at my age (44), is not a good thing! Today, I had a good (albeit short) run, and ate pretty healthy. I also hope I can get motivated to stay in LBD shape. Having to squeeze my booty into the new spell dress line was great pre-trip motivation for me. I am going to be going to Florida in February to visit my parents, which should help provide a little extra motivation to stay beach-ready.
