I’ve been on this healthy journey for over three years, but I’ve had a couple turning points. One was in August 2015 when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Like most families do when faced with devastating news for that, you search for a solution. While my parents were focused on chemo treatments, I read or listen to whatever I could get my hands on about how a preventative whole-foods, plant-based diet could actually PREVENT cancer cells from growing. Books like the Gerson Therapy, The China Study, and documentaries like Vegucated, Forks Over Knives and Hungry for Change started me thinking about food entirely differently. Food could actually be HEALING.
In January of this year, the spark was lit again when I did the Ultimate Reset. It’s a “detox” program where, over the course of three weeks, you eliminate animal products from your diet. And alcohol. And caffeine (I cheated a little bit with a morning cup of coffee on that one). I thought it was going to be REALLY TOUGH. I mean, I do like beer and bacon. A LOT. Sure, some days weren’t easy… especially when Nick’s team was on the road at basketball tournaments and everyone else was eating wings and drinking beer. It isn’t so much fun to watch and smell all of that fun going on. But, I felt so great I WANTED to do it. I had lots of energy, the foods were DELICIOUS, and digestive issues were gone.
Since then, I’ve been adding a few animal products back into my diet – mainly eggs and cheese… but in limited amounts. I’m intrigued by what foods can do to not only heal your body, but put it into peak performance. To cure the issues we have with energy, inflammation, digestive issues, etc. I’ve also let a few bad habits creep back in… namely too much coffee and not enough veggies.
It’s time to get back on track. If you’d like to learn more about this WITH me and try out a whole-foods, plant-based diet, I’ll be hosing a SPRING DETOX group on Facebook next week. Within the group I’ll be sharing recipes, menu plans, and information on how food can make you FEEL better. I want to get back to feeling the best I can, and I want that for YOU TOO!
